A handmade handira can be used as a bedcover or wall hanging. Known as Moroccan wedding blankets, handiras are woven out of sheep's wool, cotton and linen by Berber women in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco. Berber wedding blankets are woven by the bride's female relatives. It will take weeks of work to attach hundreds of mirrored sequins once the weaving is complete. After the wedding ceremony, the bride wears the blanket tied around her neck. When the handira is complete, the wedding blanket serves not only as blanket and decoration for the bride, but also to ward off evil spirits and to bestow fertility and good luck upon the newlyweds.
